Introduction to SMSspaces.com Though our goal is not to be discouraging or disrespectful, there are some universal truths when it comes to the modeling industry. Considering these truths will help you decide whether you are modeling material and will prevent you from wasting your time and energy. Before posting on SMSspaces.com ask for advice. Upload some good photos of yourself that include a link to your portfolio. Include some of the following questions: - Can I be a successful model? · Do I have the look? · What are my stats (specifically height)? · Do I live in a location where modeling is accessible? · Am I available to go to castings? · Am I willing to spend the time, effort, and money to become a successful model? · Do I have the right personality for modeling? Generally speaking, there are 2 main modeling markets: Editorial and Commercial. Editorial modeling involves high end fashion, runway shows, magazine layouts, and high end fashion advertising. Female editorial models need to be between 5’8” (1.75m) and 5’11” (1.8m) and their measurements must be no more than 34”-24”-34” (86cm-60cm-86cm) depending on height. Measurements are actually more important than weight as it is vital that you fit the clothes and have the right look. Maintaining your health is also very important. Male editorial models must be between 5’11” (1.8m) and 6’2” (1.9m) and should fit sizes 38 to 40 regular in the US. If you do not match these guidelines, editorial modeling will not be right for you. Clients are very unlikely to accept models that are outside these measurements. To start out in editorial modeling, it is recommended that you use simple photos with no make-up or expensive clothes. Commercial modeling involves commercial advertisements like you would expect from major department stores, for example. The requirements for commercial modeling are much broader. Height requirements are not strict but taller models are preferred – women under 5’5” and men under 5’10” will have difficulty finding modeling work. Also, there are no specific sizes for commercial models and sizes will range from petite to plus. In most cases, you must live in the same market as a commercial agency in order to be signed. Being flown to various locations for photo shoots is not uncommon but commercial agencies tend to work with local models only. If you’re thinking of pursuing commercial modeling, you need to build up a commercial comp card and a portfolio of professional photos. You want to show off your talent and your look. Some photographers will exchange time for prints or you can pay for photo shoots. The norm is for commercial models to pay for their portfolio photos.
